Industry Profile: Marco Rodriguez
Name:
Marco Rodriguez
Occupation:
Editorial Stylist at Revolve Clothing
What inspired you to get started as a stylist and how did you get started?
It’s a funny story. At the time I just needed a second job and my friend was working at Forever21. He was able to set up an interview for me the following week. The night before my interview I watched Rachel Zoe, Project Runway, anything you can think of so that I can get as much fashion knowledge as I could. I got the job as an assistant merchandiser. Slowly I started loving what I was doing and slowly moved my way up to Corporate Photo Shoot Stylist at Forever21.
How long have you been in your industry and what companies have you worked for?
I have been working in fashion for about six years now. I worked at Forever 21 for about four and a half years and am currently at Revolve.
Describe your style aesthetic:
I would say my aesthetic is clean and to the point. I love just doing what I feel and not caring about the "Rules of fashion”.
When I met you, you were already so established and had the best style ever! Since then you have achieved so much more success along the way, what has been the biggest challenge in establishing yourself as a stylist?
The biggest challenge was definitely having people take me seriously. I had no college education and no fashion background before Forever21. That is the number one reason I left Forever 21. I needed to know that I was good at what I did and that someone else would want to work with me.
Describe a typical day in the life of being a stylist:
It really varies especially when you work with one company. Typical week would be easier to describe. I shoot eCommerce product three times a week and Features once a week. Every other day is prep time and getting ready to shoot. It’s a lot of hard work and definitely not only glamour. Not what you see on TV.
What are some moments in your career you are most proud of?
Definitely being able to leave Forever21. Which I absolutely loved but, after four years it was time to move on. It was so scary! And, landing such an awesome position at Revolve- head stylist.
What is your most embarrassing moment on the job haha?
Hahahaha. Definitely would have to be when a rack full of coats tipped over on the store floor and I fell with it! So embarrassing, especially since it was during the holidays and the store was full of customers.
How do you stay inspired and ahead of the trend game?
I love fashion videos. The combination of music, movement, and clothes is the most inspiring thing I can watch. As far as trends just research but also do what you love and what you think looks great. Always follow your own trend.
What are ways you have seen growth as a stylist over the years?
Being able to stay calm and style on the spot during a photo shoot, which I have had to do so many times.
What advice you would give to someone interested in styling that you wish someone gave to you?
I don't think that you really need advice. Just work hard and do your thing. I think if someone would have given me advice I would have approached every task with some fear. So I am thankful I just created my own path in a weird way.
What are your never leave the house without essentials?
Skinny jeans, boots, and a comfy T shirt! That's all I wear every day.
Who are your fashion icons?
Anna Dello Russo I think is my all-time favorite person in the world!!
